Food technology human nutrition foto2What you can learn – you will acquire knowledge of food chemistry and technical, technological, nutrition sciences and economics. You will be a specialist in food processing, preservation, storage and quality control. You will learn how to organise food production, including the selection of machinery and equipment as well as how to make economic calculation. You will learn the principles of operation of the market and marketing of food and human nutrition products and services. You will learn how to use IT in technological process control and in corporate management. Your knowledge will mostly focus on transformations in food components over production and storage processes, the performance of sensory, physicochemical and microbiological analysis of food, conditions of safe food production and toxicological analysis, operation and use of machinery, technological designing  of foodstuffs production plants, the functioning of the alimentary and related systems, rational human nutrition, the use of materials for food production, the application of food preservation methods, the selection of operations and unitary processes in food technology, the application of the principles of economics, organization and management in food industry and with the accounting rules. You have a chance to pick up a foreign language at B2 fluency level defined by the European Linguistic Education Description System of the Council of Europe, which will let you use specialist vocabulary in the field of food technology and human nutrition. You will be prepared to take up 2nd degree studies (MSc course).

Food technology human nutrition foto5Where and what kind of work is there for you – having completed your studies, you are prepared to work in engineering positions in companies and institutions dealing with food processing, quality control, food trading and human nutrition holding the following positions: technologist, quality engineer, standardiser, etc., e.g. in Zakłady Jutrzenka Holding S.A. in Bydgoszcz, Zakłady Tłuszczowych Kruszwica S.A., Rieber Foods Polska S.A. in Włocławek, Zakłady Produkcji Mleczarskiej Osowa in Bydgoszcz,  Zakłady Przetwórstwa Owocowo-Warzywnego in Gniewkowo or  Sadki, sugar plants, etc.

You are not the first one and surely not the last one – the food technology and human nutrition major has been offered by two faculties: the Faculty of Agriculture and Biotechnology and the Faculty of Technology and  Chemical Engineering. The first one is located in Bernardyńska Street and the second one - in Seminaryjna Street (both in the centre of Bydgoszcz). At our University the major was launched in the academic year 2007/2008.

Food technology human nutrition foto1What you will study – the syllabus at both Faculties meets the ministerial education standards and it differs considerably in the courses offered across the specializations only. In the first semesters you will meet the courses in the humanities, including those concerning intellectual property protection, safety and hygiene at work and ergonomics. You are offered 4 semesters of a foreign language course and 2 semesters of physical education. First of all, you will get to know the basics of Information Technology, namely IT technics, word processing, spread sheets, databases, managerial graphics and/or presentation graphics, etc., and then the courses basic for the food technology and human nutrition major; thus mathematics and statistics, physics, chemistry and biochemistry as well as ecology and environmental protection. The syllabus of the key (major-oriented) courses for the major cover aspects of food chemistry, microbiology and quality analysis of materials and products, food production safety, study of machinery and process engineering, human nutrition physiology, food production: general and specialist production process technologies, organization, management and corporate economics of food companies and accounting.

How long you will study – the food technology and human nutrition major is offered at both Faculties only as regular 3.5-year BSc courses. Part of the studies can be completed in other academic centres at home as part of MOSTAR programme, which concerns agricultural universities, or abroad as part of LLP/ERASMUS.

Food technology human nutrition foto3You can choose some of the courses yourself – you can choose about 30% hours beyond the standard yourself depending just on your interests (but also the offer provided by professors of the Faculty).

Something practical – throughout your studies you will receive training of at least 4 weeks, e.g. in food –processing plants, quality control laboratories (PIH, SANEPID, etc.).

Vice Rector keeps monitoring! – the studies schedule and syllabus for the food technology and human nutrition major has been approved by the Vice Rector for Teaching and Student Affairs, which means that it meets all the conditions of top quality education.
